Dorothy, poetess supreme,
For you I long, of you I dream.
Parker, drinker, hostess, wit,
I find no adjective to fit.
Life was longer than you planned,
Death escaped your grasping hand.
You sure attempted suicide,
But never gained the other side.
Sad poem, despite the rhyming couplets. I didn’t know that about Dorothy Parker. Apparently there is not an abundance of happy creative people?
My limited knowledge of her includes “If, with the literate I am / Impelled to try an epigram / I never seek to take the credit / We all assume that Oscar said it”; or whatnot. Ohhh, wit. What a wonderful thing. =]
I’ll have to check out more of her work.
very sad poem & it definitly makes me want to know more about this person
I love how this sounds just like ‘Resume.’ Nice poem! Have you seen the film “Dorothy Parker and the Vicious Circle”? It depicts her life and her lovers and her writing. My library showed it recently in fact.
Really sad. And if this is true, Em, I hope you’re doing okay and Dorothy as well.
Potent poem. Melancholy and gloomy but still tinged with strength somehow.
