Birthday Wishes

I wish…
That I were thirty instead of twenty-one.
That my hair was naturally ginger instead of the weird shade of brown-blonde that it is.
That I was naturally skinny without ever feeling the urges of an eating disorder rule my life.
That I manage to support myself, at least partly, with writing.
That I find a comfortable niche for myself in life.
That I keep the friends I have and love.
That I never stop loving books.
That I become a crazy cat-lady.
That I have a good year.
That I sleep well.
That the people I love continue loving me back.
That Harry Potter was a real person.
That I could have more hours in each day specifically in order to read.
That Israel weren’t so hot.
That Johnny Depp, Davey Havok, and Darren Criss were close, personal friends.
That I could get through J. R. R. Tolkein’s “Lord of the Rings.”

I could keep writing this list forever, adding random wishes for past, present and future. But the most important thing right now, on this relaxing, lovely birthday is that I recognize and appreciate every bit of what I do have. Cheesy? Corny? Yes. True? That too.

This made me smile, Ilana. And some of it made me sad, too. Probably on both counts because I’ve wished so many of these things myself.

One thing I’ll say is please don’t wish away the next nine years of your life; the time goes far too quickly as it is . . . Just think about all the reading and writing you can get done in that time!

(And yeah, what’s up with brown-blonde hair? I know exactly how you feel.)

We can be crazy cat-ladies together!

I hope you had a brilliant birthday, and I hope your fondest wishes come true. May your year be free of eating disorders and worry, and full of writing, good sleeps, places to belong, great friends and people who love you, amazing books, mild weather, with plenty of Johnny, Davey, and Darren. =]

    Love you.

    • Hmm, yeah, it’s just that if I were thirty already, some things would make a lot more sense to me :/. Or maybe that’s just a grass-is-always-greener kind of outlook.

Aww. I love your birthday wishes, though I think you look just fabulous with your hair color! You are beautiful, inside and out. πŸ™‚ I hope your birthday is one of fantastic hopes and dreams, and that the following year will bring pleasant surprises and opportunities.

  3. I just love this. Please, don’t wish time to rush past you. Savor it. Each age is a stage and you need them all. What I’d give to be 30.
